Single Mormon men over the age of 31 and divorcees will now be allowed to serve as ordinance workers in the temple, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints confirmed Wednesday.
Previously, single men over the age of 31 weren’t allowed to officiate ordinances in the temple. Divorcees had to wait an allotted amount of time before they were allowed to serve as ordinance workers, but now they can serve immediately.
In the past, worthy single men over 31 and divorcees were still able to volunteer in different capacities in the temple as well as attend as patrons. Single women over the age of 31 have long been permitted to serve as ordinance workers in the temple, as were single men and women under the age of 31 who were endowed.
Members of the LDS Church are deemed worthy to serve in the temple if they are endowed and hold a current temple recommend.
Temples are considered “houses of the Lord” and are different from the chapels where members of the LDS Church worship weekly. In the temple, lessons on the teachings of Jesus Christ are reaffirmed through ordinances including marriage, baptism and other ceremonies.
This updated policy change was circulated to the temple presidents of the 157 operating temples last week.
